Statement by the Portuguese Government on the “Unilateral Declaration

of Independence” in the Catalan Parliament

The Portuguese Government does not recognize the unilateral declaration

of independence issued today in the Catalan regional Parliament.

Portugal condemns the breach of the constitutional order and the attack on

the rule of law in Spain – part of the European Union legal framework -, that

this act constitutes.

The Portuguese Government trusts the Spanish democratic institutions to

restore the rule of law and the constitutional order, natural framework of

democratic dialogue, in order to safeguard the rights and freedoms of all its

citizens and to guarantee that the best solution will be found to safeguard

the unity of Spain.
