The Valley Children’s
Pediatric Residency Program
Aliated with Stanford University School of Medicine
I am excited to introduce you to The Valley Children’s Pediatric Residency
Program, Aliated with Stanford University School of Medicine. As the only
dedicated pediatric facility between the Bay Area and Los Angeles, Valley
Children’s has been training residents throughout the Valley for the past 40 years.
Now Valley Children’s is taking the lead in training the next generation of
pediatricians and pediatric surgical and medical specialists in creating a new,
pediatric-focused teaching program in Central California. With Stanford as our
academic partner, we’ll prepare doctors to continue providing the highest quality
medical care for children.
I joined the Valley Children’s Healthcare team in 2000. I was just out of residency
and started my career at this freestanding, nonprofit children’s hospital in the
heart of Central California. Over the past 15 years I have watched Valley Children’s
Hospital grow into the impressive healthcare network it is today. More than 1.3
million children living in our 11-county referral area have better access to our
expanding clinical services.
In pursuing our vision to provide the nation’s best healthcare for kids, we
constantly look to add new talent and inspire innovation. This vision now includes
oering the best graduate medical education. We are confident you will enjoy our
medical education transformation. As part of this new program you will have the
opportunity to be a leader and actively contribute to our developing academic
partnership with Stanford School of Medicine.
To enhance your training over the next three years, our broad vision for the
new program includes focusing on quality and patient safety, interprofessional
education, and community partnerships, in addition to emphasizing hands-on
care in our 356-bed children’s hospital.
Valley Children’s is committed to advancing outstanding clinicians and
pediatricians, as well as future leaders in the field of medicine and advocacy
in pediatric health. We hope you will consider us when evaluating pediatric
training programs. Come join the legacy in providing the best healthcare for kids
and working with national leaders in graduate medical education programs.

The Best Place to Learn
A Great Place to Live
Considering continuing your medical education at
Valley Children’s raises two important questions:
Why train with the Valley Children’s team?
Why come to Central California?
We invite you to take a closer look at why our
organization appeals to thousands of medical
professionals like you and what makes our region
an enjoyable place to call home.
Valley Children’s Legacy
The Valley Children’s Pediatric Residency Program, Aliated with
Stanford University School of Medicine, will prepare the next
generation of pediatricians and pediatric surgical and medical
specialists like you to continue delivering the best medical care to
children and families.
The Pediatric Residency experience at Valley Children’s will
expose you to the full array of pediatric subspecialty and support
services such as cardiology, emergency medicine, endocrinology,
gastroenterology, genetics, hematology/oncology, infectious
diseases, intensive care, neonatology, nephrology, pulmonology
and rehabilitation.
Pediatric surgical subspecialties include cardiothoracic surgery,
general surgery, neurosurgery, orthopaedics, otolaryngology, and
plastic and reconstructive surgery.
Our diverse, significantly underserved region representing more than 90 ethnic groups throughout our expansive service area
oers unique clinical opportunities. As one of our pediatric residents, you will be exposed to a high volume and wide variety
of complex and critically ill children in a short period of time. You will work on cases many healthcare professionals only read
about while supported by state-of-the-art technology and a comprehensive, multidisciplinary healthcare network. You will
learn the skills necessary to deliver pediatric care to a multicultural population in any geographic setting.
Another distinctive aspect of our pediatric residency program is Valley Children’s partnership with hospitals and medical
groups throughout the area. Valley Children’s residents may rotate at our partner locations – including Kaiser Permanente and
Saint Agnes Medical Center in Fresno, along with Adventist Health, and Dignity Health – and local pediatricians’ oces.
With Stanford as our academic partner, Valley Children’s residents will rotate at the Palo Alto campus for two months where
you will access skilled pediatric physicians in adolescent medicine and developmental behavior.
In 1952 our founding mothers had an
inspiring vision to provide care for children
in a hospital as special as its patients.
Valley Children’s has flourished ever since,
becoming one of the largest pediatric
healthcare networks in the nation that
oers high-quality, compassionate care
exclusively for Central California children
from before birth to young adulthood.
Our independent, nonprofit network
provides highly specialized medical
and surgical services to treat conditions
ranging from common to the most
unusual and complex. We perform this
extraordinary care at our medical facility
that includes our 356-bed main children’s
hospital and three neonatal satellite
locations, as well as through partner
hospitals, primary care centers, and
specialty care centers throughout our
45,000-square-mile service area.
Training the Next Generation
Valley Children’s strives to hire and retain the best pediatric subspecialists and
sta to deliver the highest quality care with outcomes consistently above state
and national averages for children’s hospitals. Below are just a few highlights:
Our Cancer and Blood Diseases Center is a leading pediatric cancer
and blood diseases center on the West Coast, ranking in the top 10%
of therapeutic enrollments to National Cancer Institute studies through
Children’s Oncology Group – the world’s largest organization devoted to
childhood cancer research.
Our Emergency Department is the busiest in California for patients
younger than 21 years of age yet still maintains impressive short wait times
well below the national average.
Our Level IV Neonatal Intensive Care Unit – a specially designed nursery
that provides the most advanced, around-the-clock care and monitoring
for vulnerable infants in Central California – ranks among the highest in
severity of illness among NICUs nationally yet we achieve better results in
survival and morbidity compared to our peers.
The Willson Heart Center provides state-of-the-art therapies for the most
complex congenital and pediatric cardiovascular disease.
Our expert Transport Team provides over 900 neonatal transports a year
– about 18% of all neonatal transports in California – delivering the most
experienced, lifesaving care in the Valley.
The Charlie Mitchell Children’s Center is a rural health center oering
family-focused, interdisciplinary, primary care to children with acute and
chronic medical conditions, including patients’ siblings so that brothers
and sisters can all receive medical care from the same practice.
Our pediatric Hospitalist Practice provides evidence-based, high-quality inpatient
care 24 hours a day, seven days a week, admitting about 45 percent of the Hospital’s
annual acute care admissions and those managed by Charlie Mitchell Children’s Center
(complex primary care).
The Guilds Child Abuse Prevention and Treatment Center oversees Valley Children’s
child abuse and neglect program activities, providing expert diagnostic, forensic and
therapeutic evaluations and treatment services while working to improve communication
and protect children from harm.
Our Rehabilitation Center’s 20-bed inpatient unit is one of only three facilities in the
state accredited as a pediatric specialty program by the Commission on Accreditation of
Rehabilitation Facilities (CARF).
Valley Children’s was the first pediatric hospital west of the Rockies to receive
Magnet® nursing designation and has remained in the elite group of less than
7 percent of hospitals nationwide for more than a decade.
Excellence In Pediatric Specialty Care
Our Pediatric ICU is one of fewer than a dozen nationally to receive the gold-level
Beacon Award for Excellence™ from the American Association of Critical-Care Nurses
(AACN), demonstrating sustained excellence in unit performance and patient outcomes.
With the best people on our team, Valley Children’s will continue on our path of clinical
excellence.
Interprofessional Simulation Program
Valley Children’s is expanding its interprofessional simulation program, which highlights our
mission of education, assessment, quality, patient safety and clinical practice. Our program
utilizes an in-situ methodology and oers residents and healthcare professionals opportunities
to work side by side developing strong communication and collaborative skills that improve
patient outcomes.
Sophisticated, high fidelity-based scenarios enable residents to learn through a hands-on
approach how to develop leadership skills, respond to critical situations and perform complex
procedures working within the healthcare team. Residents will train with other healthcare
trainees such as pharmacy, nursing and social work students as well as hospital sta. Scenarios
take place in an actual patient room followed by a debrief session led by trained faculty in a
safe and confidential setting.
