Village Park Skatepark and Jump Park moving ahead to construction
Cumberland, BC – The Village of Cumberland is excited to announce that construction of the much anticipated
Skatepark and Jump Park is moving ahead in spring 2017. The new skatepark and jump park will be built in
Village Park adjacent to the Dog Park and Wellington Colliery Trail. The project is a collaboration between the
Village and the Cumberland Community Schools Society (CCSS) and United Riders of Cumberland (UROC).
While finalized designs for this site have been developed over the past year, Villagers have had a Cumberland
skatepark and jump park on their wish list for over a decade.
“This project has been a long time coming, and Council is excited to be moving into the construction phase,”
said Mayor Leslie Baird. “Having a skatepark and jump park will only make Cumberland a better place to live,
especially for our growing youth population, and along with our world class trail network it gives people one
more reason to visit the village.”
Spectrum Skateparks developed the skatepark design with input from the CCSS Skatepark Committee, while
the local Comox Valley firm Outlook Land Design completed the overall site plan, which included input from
UROC on jump trail layout. Strong community support was demonstrated for the project at a public open
house and via a questionnaire in the fall of 2016.
The 5200 square foot custom concrete skatepark will have a street section, a bowl and a mini-ramp. Designed
with an emphasis on beginner to intermediate features to reflect Cumberland’s growing demographic of
young families, advanced features are also built in to challenge more experienced skateboarders. The
construction contract has been awarded to the Comox firm Radius Contracting Inc., a company with
experience building skateparks throughout BC and the rest of Canada.
“We think we came up with a pretty rad design”, notes Cameron Matthews, Chair of the CCSS Skatepark
Committee. “The goal is to build a skatepark that works well for our community, and our design has street,
vert, and flow features to cater the full spectrum of skate styles.”
Meanwhile, for the Jump Park a design-build contract has been awarded to Squamish-based Dream Wizards
Events Ltd. Dream Wizards will be responsible for the final in-field design, shaping and grading of four dirt
jump trails (beginner through to expert in difficulty rating), a pump track and a run bike trail.
Lead by the renowned BC trail builder Ted Tempany (a.k.a. Big Red Ted), Dream Wizards has been building
bike trails, jumps, pump tracks, and slopestyle courses throughout BC, the United States and as far away as
New Zealand for over a decade, including for both professional and recreational riders.
“Our membership has been fundraising and advocating for a place to build legit dirt jumps for years, and we’re
excited to add another dimension to Cumberland’s already diverse mountain bike scene,” said Mike Manara of
UROC.
The total value of the project is $465,000. The majority of project funding has come from the Village, as well
as additional funding from the UROC and the CCSS via fundraising events, grants, and in kind donations.
Construction is slated to begin in late March with a target completion date of early summer 2017. A grand
opening event will be held upon completion – more information will be shared closer to the date.
